The present volume contains an annotated classification of all important contributions to the study of demographic trends and situation in India, which had been published prior to 1970. The annotations are purposive and they indicate the substantive nature of the contribution particularly for its relevance to policy formulation and programme implementation in the field of population intervention. While all important contributions for the period prior to Independence have been included, the emphasis has been on research conducted during the planning period beginning with 1951. As the policy thrust during this period has been on the control of population, a substantive part of the literature deals with fertility and family planning.
The literature has been classified into seven categories on the basis of the thematic content of different contributions. These classes are: General Demography; Population Size, Growth, Problems & Policy: Population Structure and Composition; Nuptiality, Fertility and Family Planning; Mortality and Morbidity, Population Distribution, Migration and Urbanisation and Methods of Demographic Analysis. The objective in publishing the bibliography is to provide easy access to relevant research to planners, policy makers, research workers, students and scholars, in general, interested in the dynamics of India's population.
P.B. Desai, former Director of the Institute of Economic Growth is currently Head of its Population Research Centre. He was President of the Indian Association for the study of Population and is presently Editor-in-Chief of the Association's Journal, Demography India. He has written several books and papers in reputed journals. Some of his important contributions are: Size and Sex Composition of Population in India; Planning in India; Studies in Social Dynamics of Primary Health Care.
