The virtual ceremony of Operational Alliance Agreement (OAA) signing between ICSSR and British Council, UK was held today, 22nd September 2020 at 4:00 PM. This collaboration with British Council will provide opportunities to Social Science scholars of both UK and Indian higher education institutions to develop their research capabilities.

The ceremony started with the Welcome Address by Dr. Jaya Goyal, Head, Higher Education and Society, British Council, India. Dr. Goyal welcomed all the guests present in the ceremony and introduced them to the attendees. She invited Ms. Sarah Fallon, Regional Director, Science & Innovation, British High Commission to speak on Newton-Bhabha Fund: The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) perspective on ICSSR partnership. Dr. Janaka Pushapanathan, Acting Country Director, British Council, India underlined the importance this partnership in the field of social science research and how young Ph.D scholars of both the countries are going to be benefitted through this agreement.

Prof. V.K. Malhotra, Member Secretary, ICSSR highlighted the importance of this agreement by stating that the Newton Bhabha Fund PhD Placement Programme is going to be supported by the both the United Kingdom and Indian governments and issues grants for approximately 20 PhD scholar student placements from India to the United Kingdom and 10 PhD scholar student placements from the UK to India, in order to facilitate a period of their study, between 2 to 4 months, in Indian and UK higher education institutions. The British Council and ICSSR are collaborating to deliver this Programme, which also aims to facilitate the capacity building of individuals through PhD placements.

The ceremony concluded with the signing of the OAA by Prof. V.K. Malhotra, Member Secretary from ICSSR side and Dr. Janaka Pushapanathan, Acting Country Director from British Council side.
