About the Book

The book Inter-village Differences in Matar Taluka examines the socio-economic transformation of rural villages in Matar Taluka of Kheda district, Gujarat, following the expansion of canal irrigation and the Green Revolution. The introduction highlights how irrigation influenced agricultural productivity, adoption of modern technology, rural infrastructure, occupational diversification, and overall regional development. Drawing upon village-level data collected under an ICSSR-funded project, the study analyses differences among 81 villages during the period 1965–75.

The work particularly focuses on the relationship between irrigation, agricultural growth, social overheads, and sectoral development. It also investigates inequalities in access to irrigation and modern agricultural practices across villages. The study aims to construct a village-level development index, identify factors affecting agricultural growth, examine the spatial distribution of social infrastructure, and assess how irrigation and technology contributed to economic transformation in the region. Overall, the book provides an important empirical analysis of rural development and inter-village disparities in Gujarat during the post-Green Revolution period.
