The city of Hyderabad also known as Bhagyanagar was founded by King Muhammad Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah in 1591 AD on the northern bank of river Musi as the walled city of Golkonda, his capital was getting too congested. Secunderabad developed with the advent of the railways, establishment of industries and cantonment area. In March 1951 Secunderabad Municipality and Secunderabad Cantonment were merged with Hyderabad. It is a centre of Dakhani Urdu which was derived from Persian, Arabic, Telugu, Marathi and Hindi. Hyderabad is famous for its pearls and food, especially the biryani, harris and halim.
To assist the Council in the organization of its programmes within the Southern Region and to develop documentation and bibliographical services in some of the South Indian languages the Southern Regional Centre was established on 1st February 1973 at the Osmania University Campus in collaboration with the Osmania University and the Government of Andhra Pradesh. The founder Director of the Southern Regional Centre was Late Prof. G. Ram Reddy who rose to become the Chairman of SRC (1977-82), Chairman, UGC, and Chairman, ICSSR.
The main aims of the Southern Regional Centre are:
1. To collect and stock social science research material in Telugu and Urdu in addition to English and maintain the necessary equipment for its use;
2. Represent the ICSSR within the Region and to work for extension of its programme to social scientists in the region.
3. Bring the social scientists of the region closer for promotion of social science research.
4. Bring the ideas and problems of the social scientists of the region to the notice of the ICSSR, New Delhi;
5. Serve as a link between the social scientists of the region and national and international communities of the social scientists.
Perform the above role, the following activities are envisaged for the Regional Centre:
In addition, the regional centres may provide financial assistance for organizing training programmes in research methodology/application of computers in social science research;
Arrange visits of eminent social scientists to the Centre where they deliver lectures and hold discussions and seminars, and
Organize any other activity which the ICSSR may entrust to the Regional Centres.
Vice-Chancellor
The Vice-Chancellor of Osmania University is the Chairman of the Southern Regional Centre. He broadly supervises the Centre’s and programmes. For advising the Chairman in the planning and development of its programmes, the ICSSR constitutes, in consultation with the chairman, an Advisory Committee consisting of representatives of the Social Science Departments of the Universities and Research institutions in the Five States and Two Union Territories in Southern Region. The tenure of the advisory committee is two years. It meets at least once a year to review the work of the Centre during the preceding year and recommends programmes to be developed during the ensuing year.
Honorary Director
The Honorary Director is the Chief Executive Officer of the Southern Regional Centre. His/her powers, duties and responsibilities shall be as defined in the Byelaws. He/she function under the broad directions and guidance of the Advisory Committee of the Southern Regional Centre. He/she shall have powers of supervision and control over the administration, funds and properties of the Southern Regional Centre. The Honorary Director of the Southern Regional Centre shall be ex-officio Member-Secretary of its Advisory Committee and its sub-committees. He/she shall convene the meeting of the Advisory Committee in consultation with the Chairman and Co-Chairman. He shall call upon meetings of all sub-committees. He/she shall be responsible for all administrative, financial and academic matters in the Southern Regional Centre. He/she shall be responsible for preparation of reports of the activities and financial accounts of the Southern Regional Centre. He/she shall prescribe duties to all officers and staff of the Southern Regional Centre and shall exercise supervision and disciplinary control, as may be necessary, subject to the Rules & Regulations and Orders of the Advisory Committee.
Documentation and Bibliographical Services
It has brought out annotated bibliographies of Telugu and Urdu books in social sciences available in major libraries in India. The Centre has also brought out indices of articles in Telugu and Urdu from old and current social sciences periodicals and newspapers with respect to different social science subjects. The Centre also brings out documentation lists in social sciences in mimeographed form in English. It also brings out lists of select articles from journals and newspapers in English, Telugu, Urdu, Malayalam and Kannada, apart from publishing the current contents in social sciences.
The Centre has brought out a number of occasional Bibliographical publications on topics of current interest such as Indian Women, Indian Muslims, Centre-State Relations, National Integration, Reservation Policy, Population Education and Communalism.
One of the important activities of the Centre is the periodical compilation of M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in Social Sciences in South Indian Universities in collaboration with Madras Institute of Development Studies, Chennai.
Promotional Programmes
The ICSSR, Southern Regional Centre has been continuously providing partial financial assistance for organizing theme oriented seminar / workshop/ conference/ convention / symposium etc in different social science disciplines both at the university /college and institutes of the southern region.
Research Methodology Courses
Another important activity of the Centre is organizing and sponsoring Research Methodology Courses for Social Science researchers in different cities of the Southern Region.
Study Grants
In order to enable the researchers in Social Sciences from different institutions in the Southern Region, the Centre provides financial assistance for their visit to Hyderabad for collection of data from different institutions in the twin cities. In order to enable these research scholars to stay in Hyderabad at a convenient place and at a reasonable rate the Centre provides Guest House facilities.
Short Duration Research Projects and Publications
One of the important objectives of the ICSSR-SRC is to promote and disseminate Social Science Research knowledge in Southern India. In this context, the primary objective of the awarding research grants for projects of short duration within the region is to provide financial assistance to the faculty of social sciences to conduct cutting edge research in various fields of social sciences that have theoretical, conceptual, methodological and policy implications.
Lectures
The Southern Regional Centre organizes Lectures with the visiting eminent scholars on the topics of contemporary relevance in different social science disciplines.
Guidance to Scholars
Young research scholars from Hyderabad and other places approach the Regional Centre for guidance in their research work in terms of reading materials, bibliographies, documentation lists, formulation of research proposals, construction of questionnaire, etc.
Library
The collection is mostly in English language (apart from Telugu and Urdu being Regional languages) help in bringing out occasional bibliographical publications on topics of current interest. Further, the Centre has built up good collection of theme oriented books and journals which is around 25,000 volumes. The newspaper files sent by NASSDOC from New Delhi are also being preserved in our Library for reference purposes.
e - Library
Keeping in view the application of information technology for research, library initiated automation of its collection of books, bound volumes of journals and newspapers and is made available through Software NewGenLib. Recently library is being provided with 16 computers with internet facility and more than 15000 full text online journals are available for research scholars at e-Library of Southern Regional Centre.
Digitization Section
In order to cater to the needs of researchers in social sciences, ICSSR-SRC has initiated the scanning of 20 News Papers which includes 5 English News Papers, 5 Urdu News Papers and 10 Telugu News Papers. The Digitization work is under process.

Conference Halls
The Southern Regional Centre has two well furnished Air conditioned conference halls with a fixed Public Address system with a seating capacity of 150 and 40 respectively. The Centre charges Rs.3,300/- per day for 150 Capacity Hall and Rs.2,200/- per day for 40 Capacity Hall.
