ICSSR-NRC is one of the Six Regional Centres of the ICSSR which was established in 1975 and later got affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in 1975. NRC started functioning from the Central Library building of JNU and later was shifted for a short while to ICSSR Headquarters in 2004. The Centre was shifted back JNU in 2012 at the Old CRS Building of JNU.

NRC extends its services to the state of Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Delhi. NRC is governed by an Advisory Committee appointed by the ICSSR in consultation with Chairman NRC (V.C, JNU). The Advisory Committee broadly supervises the technical and financial status of the Centre and guide research programmes. Advisory Committee consists of the representatives of different branches of Social Science drawn from various departments of the universities and research institutions falling in the Northern Region. Vice-Chancellor, JNU, is ex-officio Chairman of the Committee. ICSSR is represented by Member Secretary (ex-officio Member) and a Council member of ICSSR. Hony. Director looks after the day to day functioning of NRC.

 

Aim & Objectives

The aims and objectives of the NRC are as follows:

    • to act as an agent of the ICSSR within the region: Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi; since November 2000 the states of Uttaranchal and Chhattisgarh are also covered.
    • to act as a representative of social scientists of the region and to bring their ideas and problems to the ICSSR;
    • to provide a platform for social scientists of the region to come together for promotion of social science research through workshops and seminars; and
    • to serve as link between social scientists of the region and the national and international community of social scientists.

     

    Objectives

    1. Organizing in collaboration with or assisting the organization of seminars/workshops/conferences;
    2. Organizing lectures by distinguished scholars;
    3. Promoting and/or sponsoring documentation and bibliographical work in the regional languages;
    4. Promoting/undertaking special documentation work;
    5. Supplementing the social science journals/periodicals at the libraries of the institutions;
    6. Assisting regional professional associations of social scientists;
    7. Awarding study grants for scholars for visiting libraries/institutions for research work; and
    8. Any other activity which may promote social science research in the region and/or which may be delegated by the ICSSR

    Activities of the Centre

    The NRC provide financial assistance for
    Research Projects (upto Rs.1,00,000/- duration 6-12 months) Guidelines Application Form
    Seminars/Conferences/workshops (upto Rs. 1,50,000/-) Guidelines Application Form
    Graduate Seminar (upto Rs. 1,50,000/-)    
    Study Grant (to provide assistance to doctoral students. Maximum period for study grant is 30-45 days. Reimbursement of TA/DA, Rail Sleeper class fare to and fro + Rs. 500 per day for boarding and lodging and Rs. 2000 to meet local conveyance and other miscellaneous expenses. Visit to a maximum of three cities for consulting material in libraries, state archives etc., relevant to their doctoral work.
