This volume examines the concept of community participation in education across states i.e. Andhra Pradesh & Kerala and communities i.e. tribal and non-tribal. Community participation has emerged as the best practice in education to achieve universal enrolment while improving the quality and relevance of teaching and learning. Before analyzing the empirical data in the final chapters, the initial chapters in this book discussed the status of literacy, enrolment and drop-out among tribal and general category in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and India. Major policy initiatives with reference to community participation in education have been reviewed. The impact of community participation in education across different states including various experiences of government and non-governmental initiatives in education have also been explained.

The empirical data presented in the sixth chapter on the participation of scheduled tribes in school-related activities in Andhra Pradesh and Kerala reveals that their understanding of community ownership over schools is not so impressive across the states. The empirical data presented in the seventh chapter reveals that the tribal community are little backward in terms of community ownership of schools while comparing with non-tribal communities in Andhra Pradesh.

About the Author

V. Srinivasa Rao is Associate Professor at the Centre of Regional Studies (CRS), School of Social Sciences, University of Hyderabad, India. Earlier he was Assistant Professor and Research Associate in the Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP) at the University of Hyderabad (2009-17) and Maulana Azad National Urdu University (2007-9) respectively. Prior to this, he undertook research while working with CARE-INDIA on education, health, food security and livelihood activites in the tribal areas of northern Andhra Pradesh on the Sustainable Tribal Empowerment Project (STEP) assisted by the European Union (2002-7). He recently edited the book entitled Adivasi Right and Exclusion in India published by Routledge (Taylor & Francis Group), London. He has also published his research findings in peer-reviewed journals including Economic and Political Weekly, Journal of Educational Planning and Administration and Indian Journal of Public Administration.
